Types of dentures

Full dentures

Full Dentures are worn by patients who are missing all teeth in either the maxillary or mandibular arch. The complete dentures cover the entire upper or lower jaw. They are made of a gum-colored base and attached false teeth. There are three types of full dentures:

Conventional dentures

Conventional dentures are recommended for patients with completely healed gums. They can be put in place after eight weeks from the latest extraction. A patient’s gum healing time can vary from person to person and the exact time for the denture installation will be determined by the dentist. During this period, the patient needs to maintain proper dental hygiene and appropriate diet to facilitate the healing.

Immediate dentures

To prevent the acute discomfort of living without teeth, immediate dentures are an ideal option. They can be worn immediately after the last tooth is removed. However, the jaw modifies continuously during the gum healing process, so periodic adjustments need to be made. Immediate dentures are recommended as a temporary treatment until the conventional dentures can be worn.

Overdentures

Dentists try to save whatever possible from the natural teeth, regardless of their condition. Natural teeth help maintain the jawbone in good condition and provide good support to the dentures. The overdenture is designed to accommodate existing teeth. Dental implants can also be used for support.

Advantages of Full Dentures:

  • Mastication will be improved
  • Aesthetics will be improved giving the face a more natural look, the dentures will help provide support to the lips and cheeks eliminating the collapsed appearance.
  • Speech will become better once missing teeth are replaced improving pronunciation
  • Self-esteem once speech and looks are improved the patient will notice a boost of confidence

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are suitable for patients who need denture only on a part of their mouth. Unlike bridges, the partial dentures can be removed by the patient for added comfort. They are attached to existing teeth or implants with precision attachments or clasps.

Advantages of Partial Dentures

  • Replace a single tooth or multiple
  • More affordable than other alternatives of tooth replacement
  • Usually no surgery is needed
  • Causes no harm to adjacent teeth
  • Very aesthetically pleasing
